The New Stuff

SWACHH BHARAT ABHIYAAN

Today we the young minds woke up with high spirits to contribute towards the SWACHH BHARAT ABHIYAAN. A group of 21 girls gathered to clean the Gandhi Chowk (the lane opposite the bus depot outside CST station) and more importantly to spread the awareness of not littering among the people there. With the support of BMC we managed to accomplish this cleanliness drive which provided us with broomsticks, wheel bins, scrappers and gloves.
Believe it or not the streets were filled with thrash which had plastics, papers, disposable glasses and even wet waste. We started the campaign at 6:30 am and it went on for three hours. Meanwhile one thing that we really felt was it takes just a second without a thought to throw one little thing on streets and at the same time it takes hours to clear the lump of garbage.
There was a sense of pride while we were doing this and the onlookers did realize that we were there to create awareness at the very basic level to JUST NOT LITTER. We were highly motivated by few people who felt we were doing a great job and at the same time there were people who thought it was a waste and this thought was in itself disgusting.

The varied reviews that we got during this campaign:
>Ye sab Elections ke liye chalra hai!!
>Ye sab show hai.
>One cab driver said “thikse saaf karo sab kuch”.
>Ek din karke kya matlab hai?
>Hamare ghar bhi saaf kar do!
>Modi ke gharwale lagte hai!

But still we were motivated by people who offered to serve as well and said it was a great initiative and every other person should come up with this. It was this one person from Bangalore who was to change trains at CST. He came up to us during his refreshment, took the broom in hand and said he will ask all his friends to come up with the same.
Followup

More then cleaning our motto was to spread awareness. We had an interaction with the hawkers in the same area in the evening to find out the situation. We are assured by them that they will look after the area and some even promised to put dustbins around their food stalls. We will keep visiting them to make sure they did understand the importance of SWACHH BHARAT.

Today we just want to say there would not be any need to get down on the streets to clear such dirt only if we have it clear in our minds TO NOT LITTER. We are a nation with its huge population as a boon in which if the land is divided per head every individual has to look after a small area. Just like we don’t like to see OUR HOMES unclean, why not OUR COUNTRY?
